Letter to Congress Urging Repeal of Tax on Pell Grants

November 28, 2022

Today, The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, on behalf of 26 other higher education and consumer organizations, sent a letter to Congress urging repeal of the tax on Pell Grants, which harms college students’ ability to afford their basic needs like food, housing, and child care. Approximately 3 million Pell Grant recipients are taxed each year. Congress is currently debating year-end tax legislation that could include this important issue. The letter follows a June 27 letter from similar groups and an October 28 letter from higher education associations urging Congress to stop taxing Pell Grants.
